Fish is an important food source in Egypt, accounting for 25.3% of the average household’s protein intake. According to WorldFish, Fish consumption in Egypt is estimated at 23.5 kg per person, per year.
Tilapia is the species most farmed in the country, which has 115,000 hectares of aquaculture ponds. The majority of the country’s fish production is consumed locally, providing the equivalent of one fish per person per week.
According to reports, Egypt is expected to produce about 2.3 million metric tons of fish in 2020. Fish-farming covers 75% of the country’s total fish production.
